To God Be The Glory!

Opening

  • During Cnut the Great’s reign as King of England, he led the Northern Sea Empire fulfilling the mission of his father. He was the most successful leader of the Anglo-Saxon period.

  • Despite his perceived greatness - to not keep the king in too high of esteem - the king intentionally put his throne at the edge of the sea. Although he commanded the tides to not touch his throne, robe, etc.; the water still touched him and his throne.

  • The king declared that the power of kings is vain & trivial and that none is worthy of the name King besides the One who controls the heavens and the earth!

God alone reigns and rules the world.

Sermon Key Points

  • 1 Timothy 1:17 bids us to submit our midget throne before the singular & great throne of the eternal, immortal and invisible King.

  • This verse is also a doxology – it is a good word about the greatness of God. It is a benediction where the pastoral leadership gives a blessing to us at the end of service.

  • God has the last word.

    • Our jobs, doctors, financial advisors, spouse, etc. do not have the last word.

    • Only the King eternal, immortal and invisible has the last word.

    • Some of us cannot fall asleep at night because we think our life is in the hands of somebody else. But that is not true – God ALONE has your life in His Hands.

  • Paul has left Timothy in Ephesus while he went off to Macedonia, and chaos ensued in the Church at Ephesus.

    • The solution to all of these problems was an examination of what real biblical leadership in the life of Church what looks.

    • God has provided then the same as what He has provided now – the basis for leadership. We need a pastor in our lives.

  • Paul says in verse 16 that he wants Timothy to follow his example, and he acknowledges that he is a sinner but because of God’s mercy, God had patience with him and used him to bless others!

    • So, in verse 17, Paul intentionally took a pause to praise God because of His Mercy!

      • A reason to praise the Lord is because He has been patience with us like Paul.

  • There are attributes to describe the keeping power of God.

    • The unique attributes of God uniquely qualify Him to handle what is handling you.

      • King Eternal

        • Time cannot age Him, and ages do not time Him.

      • Immortal

      • Invisible

        • The invisibility of God speaks to the supremacy of God over all creation

        • Man has only seen God in the manner in which He has chosen to reveal Himself to mankind (ie: the Bible)

    • God is not limited.

    • God is a Spirit.

  • Jesus is God clothed in human flesh.
