Leaving a Legacy: A Great Gift for Our Great God

Opening:

  • Descriptions of 3 types of pastors:

  1. Risk Takers-Concern about the future and see the possibility of what could be. Passion and work towards building that kingdom future

  2. Caretakers- Preoccupied with the present. Fixated on maintenance and inherited a legacy to pass on to the next

  3. Undertakers- So fixed on the past and can barely dream about the future. They cripple their present

  • Pastor Dates reflected on the type of pastor he has been at Progressive Baptist Church over the last 12 years. (Children’s Ministry, Food Truck, and new sitting)

  • The changes over the last 12 years was able to take place due to a Sacrificial Giving

  • 1st and 2nd Chronicles overlaps and covers the same history as 1st & 2nd Kings

  •  There are books of history and chronicle the story on how God has moved in the life of Israel

  • History is theology taught in illustration. We learn about God and how people who trust God achieve great things by their illustrative work

  • 1st & 2nd Kings discuss God’s judgment on sin. God is not pleased with our sins

  • In 1st & 2nd Chronicles, it tells how faith in God can lead to victory even over your personal sins

  • Do you trust God to be everything he said to be?

Sermon Key Points:

  • In 1 Chronicles 29, we meet King David (he sinned tragically) so therefore he was not permitted to building the temple for God

  • God selected Solomon (David’s Son) to build his temple. Every generation should build or extend their work for God from the previous generation

  • 1 Chronicles 29:1- God reserves some work for successors to a previous generation. God will not allow every generation to accomplish everything and leaves work for the next generation

  • We have to do something exceptional, great, special for the living God.

  • Everything you do inside the church should be to the Glory of God

  • God is asking you to give a gift like you never gave before. Scripture illustrates that those that walk with God and have been blessed by God give above and beyond to the God that has given above and beyond to them

  • 1 Chronicles 29:2- David prepared the financial resources to build temple

  • 1 Chronicles 29:3- They made provisions to make a permanent temple to meet God. David begins to compile a significant amount of money to build the temple.

  • David gave his security stash and possibly risk his future and gave it to God

  • Legacy Gift- making a sacrificial gift to bless the next generation and further the Kingdom work

  • What would prompt someone to think radically in this way?

  • It is the greatness of God that is demonstrated in him blessing others

  • 1 Chronicles 29:10- David blessed the Lord in front of everyone and he says it is the greatness of God that prompts people to give generously back to God

  • When God touches people he makes them a little bit like him

  • Your giving to God depends on the tightness of your relationship with God
